Newark Priory is a ruined Augustinian Priory near Pyrford in Surrey that was established in 1189. It is located on an island on the River Wey and is further surrounded by the Abbey Stream. Wikipedia has a brief history of it at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newark_Priory and a Google search throws up some other interesting websites if you are interested in the history of the place as I am.

The ruins are visible from the road at Newark Lane and from the towpath along the River Wey at Newark Lock. The best views of the Priory are gained by paddling along the Abbey Stream in a canoe or kayak.
To access the Abbey Stream by canoe the nearest put in is at Newark Priory Bridge (http://www.paddlepoints.net/PaddlePoints.aspx?PaddlePointId=106) and you will need to portage the weir as it is not runnable. If you have the time there are other paddles in the area such as this http://www.paddlepoints.net/PaddlePoints.aspx?RouteId=237&AC=7900 that takes you past the ruins of Woking Palace too which is another piece if local history that doesn’t get the publicity it deserves.
There is a lack of close up photos of this once great building on the internet so below are a few of mine so that others can appreciate what the ruins look like today.
